Picture this: a pre-pandemic makeup routine filled with anxiety and obsession over drawing perfectly symmetrical eyeliner. A routine that would take me more than 60 minutes to apply just eyeliner and eyebrow gel (the mysteries of how to apply concealer and foundation still escape me). I finally had the aha moment in the midst of a world paused by the pandemic: that practice makes perfect. I hunkered down with all this new free time, and I optimized my makeup routine to fit within 10 minutes. And with time suddenly on my side, I started wondering about the skincare adventures I was missing out on.
My face hadn't touched skincare products for most of my life. The closest I got to face skincare was face wash, and honestly, we broke up in middle school thanks to those pesky exfoliating beads. I had this fear (likely irrational - calling all sensitive skin makeup experts to educate me) that if I wore foundation, or if I constantly washed my face, that I would be doing more harm than good. But I was turning 30 now, and I didn't want to get left behind while others were improving their skin health and I was just chilling in my rumination of thoughts of "should I, shouldn't I?"
Things in sunny Colorado were opening back up, and I decided to have a little shopping spree at Sephora, and after a very persuasive encounter, I went home with Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cleanser. Let's just say, it was more flop than fabulous on my skin. But hey, every saga has its trials, right? (Also noting this doesn't mean it won't work for you! It just didn't work for me.)
I went back to Sephora - and by the way, at this time I was definitely into buying products based on their packaging - so I picked up a Biossance gift set and frolicked on home to continue my personal test-and-learn journey. This is how I found my first favorite skincare product, Biossance's Squalane + Amino Aloe Gentle Cleanser. No breakouts, no redness, just smooth-sailing. And that first feeling of a clean face just felt so nice!
The path to discovering skincare in my 30s has been nothing short of a fun and freeing adventure. It's taught me that it's never too late to start caring for your skin, to dive into new routines, or to redefine how beauty feels to you.
You are beautiful, you are strong, and YOU'VE GOT THIS!
